Where Autonomy or Dependence Develop  PART ONE

Rudolf Dreikurs explained dysfunction, “Children are brilliant perceivers, not very good interpreters.” Learn how to assess perception at the point in which the choice is made to develop autonomy or dependence and make a difference for individuals making either choice.

Objectives:

1) Illustrate perception development as a function of perception risk factor sequence based on individual, family and group substance use behavior. 

2) Measure and pinpoint where autonomy and dependence develop and how to encourage autonomy.

Understanding Clients’ Embodied Lived Experience of a Break Up: Pre-Break Up, in the Face of a Break Up, and the Aftermath

Marta Stefanyshyn MS, Ed.S., LPC

Termination of a love relationship is one of the most frequent life events that bring people to counseling. Before we can effectively help, we need to deeply understand what a lost relationship means for each individual client, as well as how a person experiences this meaning in his/her body. In this workshop we will collaboratively examine the experience of a break up. We will use a real experience of either our clients’ or our own, and will try to empathically and intuitively understand it, as Adler encouraged us.

Participants will:

1)  Learn about Adlerian principals such as private logic, life-style, meaning, mind-body connection, and will see the use of these concepts by examining the experience of the break up. 

2)  Have an opportunity to engage in collaborative activities and group exercises that will allow the exploration of Adlerian principals and empathic understanding of the break up experience in case narratives.

Ethics: The Truth About Psychotherapy Notes

Michele R. Frey, PhD, NCC, LPC, CPCS, ACS, DNASAP

This 1.5 hour workshop will focus on educating participants on the history and purpose of psychotherapy notes as found in the Office of Federal Register (OFR) – where all HIPAA laws and regulations are found. Participants will be educated on the differences between process and progress notes and how the differences impact the confidentiality and security of protected health information for clients.

Participants will:

1)  Understand the etiology and purpose of psychotherapy.

2)  Be educated on the legal and ethical issues related to psychotherapy notes.

Emotional Intelligence to Understand Anger

Michelle Alden, LPC, NCC, CAMS II

Learn to empower clients who struggle with anger management. The presenter will address techniques used to work with clients/patients struggling with anger management issues. The use of Adlerian concepts which encourage the empowerment of the client/patient will be demonstrated.

Participants will learn to:

1) Assist patients in understanding, identifying, and modifying anger.

2) Use reflection, cognitive restructuring, and reframing to treat clients presenting with anger.

 


10:15-11:45am (1.5 Clock Hours)

Welcome to the Twilight Zone. Resolving Ethical Issues: What Happens to Complaints to the Composite Board?

Michele R. Frey, PhD, NCC, LPC, CPCS, ACS, DNASAP

Participants will learn the process for filing complaints with the Composite Board and the progression of the complaints from receipt to resolution. Participants will learn about Consent Orders issued by the Board in resolution of complaints and how to find and review them on the Board website.

Participants will:

1)  Understand how to file complaints made to the Composite Board and the progression of the complaints to resolution.

2) Be educated on following up on complaints to the Composite Board as well as understanding Consent Orders from the Board when a complaint has been resolved.

We’ve All Got Food Issues: A Menu of Adlerian Tools for Practitioners Treating Clients with Eating Disorders

Susan Belangee, PhD, LPC, NCC, ACS

When society perpetuates using food as a means of coping with emotions and life, many people develop unhealthy habits with food and exercise. Participants will learn about themselves and use that insight to inform their understanding of Adlerian concepts and strategies when working with clients struggling with food-related issues.

Objectives:

1) Understand the connection between emotions and using food (e.g., restricting, binge/purge, binge eating, excessive exercise, pills/laxative use) as a means for coping with those overwhelming emotions.

2) Investigate Adlerian concepts/strategies relevant to treating eating disorders from a personal perspective first and then synthesize their insight of theoretical knowledge with Adlerian tools for working with clients dealing with food issues.

 


1-4:15pm (3 Clock Hours)   

Where Autonomy or Dependence Develop PART TWO

(There is an additional charge of $295.00 for this session which includes Prehab certification and materials. This fee is due to the presenter at the day and time of the presentation).

This is part two of a two-part seminar. Part one is not a prerequisite, but includes useful theory and background to support the information provided.   Practitioners will learn to present, assess, and measure the Prehab intervention. Materials to present and measure perception development are included in the Prehab materials.

Objectives:

1) Review the Prehab presentation, assessment, and measurements.

2) Review and practice individual and group presentations.

3) Measure and pinpoint where autonomy and dependence develop and discuss how to encourage autonomy.

 


1-4:15pm (3 Clock Hours)

Empowering Domestic Violence Survivors Using an

Adlerian Perspective

Stacy Sampson, MS, LPC, NCC, CPCS & Dawn Echols, MS, LPC

Survivors of domestic violence face unique challenges when healing from the pervasive trauma of abuse from a partner. Participants will learn how to utilize Adlerian theoretical concepts and strategies to enhance their work with this specific client population. This workshop is comprised of discussions, lectures, and demonstrations of therapeutic strategies.

Objectives:

1) Increase knowledge of working with domestic violence survivors and the barriers interfering with their healing process.

2) Demonstrate therapeutic strategies to aid in the empowerment of survivors through focusing on survivor’s strengths and their abilities to be self-determined and give meaning to their lives.



1-5pm (3.5 Clock Hours)

Ethics: The Challenge

Jody Housker, PhD, NCC, ACS, LPC

Through a variety of games participants will be challenged to demonstrate their recall and understanding of the ACA code of ethics. Activities will require plenty of courage to be imperfect and good humor.

Objectives:

1) Build familiarity and understanding of the code of ethics.

2) Instill terminology.

3) Utilize collaborative practice of decision making.

 


6-9:15pm (3 Clock Hours)

COMMON GROUND – Round Table Event

This evening session brings together several seasoned presenters/practitioners to give a variety of perspectives of an Adlerian approach to the practice of counseling. Discussion will vary to include topics related to Adlerian theory, issues facing the profession today and questions from participants.

Objectives:

1) Share varying perspectives of the practice of Adlerian therapy.

2) Offer an opportunity for participant questions to be answered.


 

DOORS to each presentation will be closed 15 minutes after the start of the session.
No one will be allowed to enter the session after this time.
Continuing Education credit will not be provided to those missing more than15 minutes of the session attended.
