Purposefulness of Behavior: Adler’s Gold Mine Concept
Susan E. Belangee, Ph.D., LPC, NCC, ACS, DNASAP

This course explores the concept of purposefulness of behavior as Adler developed it later in his theory and how it can be used in various settings (e.g., therapy, family education, business, k-12 education). Through video clips and experiential activities, attendees will learn the concept and how to apply it.

Participants will:
1) be able to explain the concept of purposefulness of behavior
2) be able to give examples of the reasons behind their behavior from their own lives
3) practice identifying the purposefulness of behavior in case vignettes  (video clips)
4) develop a self-reflection plan about a behavior they wish to possibly change
5) share how they intend to use this concept for self-understanding across the tasks of life

Lifestyle Assessment - Analysis
Jody Housker PhD, NCC, ACS, NBCCH, LPC

(Required prerequisite: Lifestyle Assessment – Data Collection)

Participants will use data collected in the previous Life Style Assessment session to identify patterns from a strengths perspective. This session will address how to analyze data to understand basic convictions, interfering ideas, and private logic.

Objectives:
1) explain various methods of identifying themes/patterns
2) analyze the meaning of patterns from an Adlerian strengths perspective
3) summarize findings from the LifeStyle Assessment
4) discuss individualizing the LifeStyle Assessment to address issues of diversity

The Art of Counseling: Adlerian Relational Therapy (ART)
Gary Bauman, PhD, LPC, CPCS

There is an art to counseling encompassing multiple factors, many of which can be seen in other contemporary forms of therapy. Adler, however, intentionally highlighted the significance of forming and utilizing an egalitarian relationship to encourage change. This seminar summarizes and applies many Adlerian concepts through each stage of counseling.

Participants will:
1) be able to identify the stages of Adlerian counseling and will learn by observing demonstrations for forming and utilizing the therapeutic alliance to accomplish a productive, egalitarian working relationship with clients
2) reflect on and be able to identify the importance of developing and using the client's social interest to create change in their lives
3) understand and be able to evaluate a client's lifestyle as well as utilize client strengths to help motivate the client to develop the courage to embrace challenges where one's lifestyle has been ineffective for solving current problems

The Truth About Psychotherapy Notes:  Progress Notes vs Process Notes
Michele R. Frey, PhD, NCC, LPC, CPCS, ACS, DNASAP

This workshop will focus on the 2002 HIPAA ruling that clarified the use of psychotherapy notes and their special protections not afforded progress notes. There will be some lecture and some interactive work in dyads & triads.  Ethical standards will include ACA, APA, NASW, and AAMFT codes of ethics.

Participants will:
1)    demonstrate how to find HIPAA rulings stored in the Federal Register -published by the US Office of the Federal Register
2)    explain the differences when comparing progress notes (clinical records) and process notes (psychotherapy notes) as defined by the HIPAA Final Rule 2000.
3)    effectively discuss the special protections afforded to psychotherapy notes and how those protections could be made invalid
