Georgia Society of Adlerian Psychology

ADLERIANS IN ACTION 2024 CONFERENCE






The Georgia Society of Adlerian Psychology has been Approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 6816. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. Georgia Society of Adlerian Psychology is solely responsible for all aspects of the program.


GSAP has received Georgia Psychological Association Approval of
Continuing Education hours for select sessions.
Those sessions denoted with an asterisk * indicate sessions approved by GPA.

Per GA licensing board rules: Psychologists must attend in-person in order to receive continuing education credit hours.

The conference provides skill & education at the INTRODUCTORY and INTERMEDIATE levels and is intended for mental health professionals in a variety of settings, as well as students. You do not need to be at a particular level of experience to attend intermediate level sessions.

* Using Metaphors
to Process Trauma

(INTERMEDIATE)

This workshop will focus on the use of metaphors and Adlerian theory for processing trauma. It will cover the the steps outlined by Richard Kopp (Kopp, 2015/1995). The workshop will consist of lecture, demonstrations, and interactive work by participants. Participants will work in dyads and triads to practice the steps.

This workshop is designed to help you:
1. Verbalize the use of metaphors and early recollections specific to Adlerian therapy and trauma work.
2. Identify metaphors in trauma work.
3. Demonstrate methods for exploring client-generated metaphors in trauma work.
4. Verbalize the importance of the metaphor as a sensory image with differing feelings associated with it.
5. Demonstrate transforming the metaphor into a different outcome.
6. Explain the process for connecting the metaphor to the trauma and connect the changed metaphor to the traumatic event.

This session will include a live demonstration of each stage of Adlerian psychotherapy, engaging the same volunteer client for each stage. Each presenter will use techniques associated with that specific stage with the volunteer client.

1. Explain the four stages of Adlerian psychotherapy.
2. Describe various Adlerian concepts and strategies associated with each stage.
3. Discuss the kinds of information that can be obtained from various Adlerian concepts and its relevance to the therapeutic process.

This session provides updated information about terminology and best practices for working with clients who are part of the LGBTQ+ community. Adlerian concepts and ACA/APA competencies will be presented and hands-on activities will illuminate the usefulness of these concepts with this community.

1. Explain the current terminology associated with various groups within the LGBTQ+ community.
2. Discuss best practices as put forth by ACA and APA for working with clients who identify as LGBTQ+.
3. Describe Adlerian strategies that are useful for working with clients from the LGBTQ+ community.

2. Explain the usefulness of the instrument as a lifestyle assessment for research and practice.

This session builds on the Basics session by giving participants the chance to take the inventory and score it themselves. This will be done using paper and pencil copies of the inventory. Brief description and discussion of a protocol for giving feedback to clients will be shared.

1. Explain why the inventory has respondents think back to childhood experiences & how the lifestyle construct is embedded in the questions.
2. Describe the systematic process of giving feedback to clients.

This session will involve a demonstration of the BASIS-A treatment protocol. It is strongly encouraged that people attend the preceding session to have a good understanding of the instrument and be able to follow the demonstration.

1. Describe the basic structure of the treatment protocol for giving feedback & explain what highest & lowest scores can indicate on the inventory.
2. Discuss 3 scales from your own inventories that you think you use most often.

Updates and Application to Adlerian Theory

This presentation focuses on providing education and review of the update of the DSM-5. We will discuss what the DSM in general, and the DSM-5-TR specifically, has to offer as a resource for understanding and improving our clinical work with clients. We will describe how the DSM may be useful from an Adlerian theoretical orientation.

This workshop is designed to help you:
1. Identify new changes from the DSM 5 to the DSM-5-TR and describe how these changes effect therapy from an Adlerian orientation.
2. Demonstrate application of knowledge through case conceptualizations.

Sadness and loss plague the human soul and most individuals have endured such emotional challenges at least once in their life. Many have not really considered the differences between grief and depression, and some refer to these experiences synonymously. This workshop will examine the differences between grief and depression and will examine what treatment for each of these would look like from the Adlerian perspective.

This workshop is designed to help you:
1. Apply Adlerian Counseling techniques with individuals/couples who are struggling with grief or depression.
2. Identify the differences between grief and depression.

A Walk Through Codes of Ethics During Times of Change

This interactive presentation will explore the ACA and APA Codes of Ethics through both a contemporary and Adlerian lens. How ethics applies to changing applications of therapy and shifting cultural norms will be investigated. Case studies will be explored and ethical codes and actions applied.

This workshop is designed to help you:
1. Verbalize an understanding of the aspects of the Codes of Ethics (ACA & APA) that apply to changing times.
2. Apply the Adlerian theoretical framework to the importance of practicing ethically and relate Adlerian theory to ethical concepts.
3. Synthesize Adlerian techniques with the principles of the ethical codes, including beneficence, autonomy and justice.
